Food Safety and Dinnerware Safety
Both "Food Safe" and "Dinnerware Safe" are only applicable to properly fired glaze which is fully matured to cone 5-7, with good fit (no crazing) to a fully-vitrified clay body with a fired absorption of ~0.5% or lower.
Food Safety
Health Canada regulates food safety of ceramic glazes through its glazed ceramics and glassware regulations (GCGR) and the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA). Testing of our commercial fired glazes is performed by third-party laboratories to comply with these regulations, including mandatory testing for cadmium and lead leaching in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization standard ISO 6486-1:2019, entitled "Ceramic ware, glass ceramic ware and glass dinnerware in contact with food — Release of lead and cadmium — Part 1: Test Method, third edition, August 2019".
Dinnerware Safety
“Dinnerware Safe” indicates the fired glaze surface meets the Health Canada guidelines for food safe, AND the fired surface is free of texture that could potentially trap microorganisms, AND the fired surface is chemically durable.
Commercial ceramic producers bear responsibility for dinnerware safe testing wares being sold into commerce.
